Chairman Takano's Statement on 2022 Point-in-Time Count

RIVERSIDE, CA – Today, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mark Takano (D-Calif.) issued a statement following the release of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Point-in-Time (PIT) count on veterans experiencing homelessness. This year’s PIT count saw an 11 percent decrease in veteran homelessness, the largest drop in over five years.

“For the second consecutive year, we are seeing the success of Congress's efforts to reduce the number of veterans experiencing homelessness,” said Chairman Takano. “The provisions included in bills like the American Rescue Plan and the Isakson and Roe Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act have been key to ushering in the largest drop in veteran homelessness in over five years. We must keep this momentum going and work to ensure every veteran has access to safe housing. I thank Secretary McDonough for his commitment to using the evidence-based Housing First approach in VA’s programs, and I look forward to working with my colleagues, VA, and the Biden-Harris Administration to continue to develop solutions that effectively address the urgency of the homelessness crisis."

Background:  Each year, HUD releases a PIT count of unhoused people across the United States, including veterans. The annual report informs how Congress legislates and allocates resources to best respond to and prevent veteran homelessness. The 2022 PIT count is the first full PIT count since the COVID-19 pandemic began. VA and HUD saw a ten percent decrease in veteran homelessness during last year’s PIT count.
